Evaluating Training Needs
Evaluating training needs begins with identifying hazards and developing protocols. We can accomplish this by doing a walk-around in your place of business and noting potentially hazardous situations. Input from employees will also alert you to hazards that may not be immediately evident, and will further involve them in your fire and safety training program. Form a "safety team" within your organization to discuss protocols and training needs, or you may elect to bring in training and evaluation experts from outside organizations.

Fire Safety Training
Standard fire safety training for all businesses will include the location of exits and fire suppression equipment, protocol for alarm activation, evacuation and reporting. Industrial Safety Solutions can provide information for evaluating your training needs and requirements, which will aid in the design and implementation of effective training programs.

Safety Training
Safety hazards exist in every workplace, even if they consist only of slip and fall, lifting or ergonomic hazards. Of course, many businesses have more than these basic hazards, which we will identify during your safety evaluation. General training topics may be grouped into a single session, but major safety hazards are best presented through a dedicated program. All safety trainings will include the location of first aid equipment, protocol for alerts and events, evacuation procedures if warranted and reporting protocols.

Looking Beyond the Obvious
The development of a successful fire and safety training program will include hazards and situations that may not be limited to the workplace itself. Training for awareness, procedures, protocol and reporting regarding hazards that may not occur as a result of business operations includes natural disasters, risk of hazards from nearby businesses and facilities, terrorism, workplace violence and others. Preparing training for every possible emergency makes for a comprehensive program that protects employees and your business.

Who Gets Trained?
Deciding who will receive specific training will depend on your organization and the employee's risk of exposure to the hazard. Fire, evacuation, disaster and general safety training must be rolled out to all employees. Specific machine- or department-specific safety training may be limited to individuals or groups who are at the most risk. Keeping a record of trainings, employee names and attendance dates may help to protect your business from legal action should a fire or safety situation occur, as well helping with compliance auditing by government agencies.
